Motorsports: Notes from day one of the Rolex 24 at Daytona
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Audi, Racing
We came to Daytona Beach, Florida where you can drive on the beach, gun shops outnumber doughnut shops and you can putt-putt and fish for alligators at the same place. But we're not here for any of that - we've made the trip with Audi in order to experience the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the first race in the 2013 Grand-Am season and the only 24-hour race in America.
Three teams are racing four Audi R8 Grand-Am cars - WeatherTech Racing, Rum Bum Racing and APR, which is running two cars. Shown to the world two years ago, the R8 Grand-Am is part of Audi Sport's R8 LMS customer racing program that was commenced in 2008, and ever since 2009 has been nabbing success all over the world: In four years it has taken 154 victories and 17 series titles. That is with less than 100 cars sold to customers throughout the world, and the trophies - either class wins or overall victories - have been gathered from all of the major endurance races except one: Daytona.

Beet Commentary: The Challenges and Rewards Of Advanced TV Advertsing
LAS VEGAS — "Audiences are changing—they’re not watching just television anymore. They’re multi-tasking," says Beet.TV contributor Ashely Swartz. As a result, advertising is changing as well. Swartz reports from the Rovi booth at CES about the growing need for interactive, data-driven ad delivery and how Rovi’s multi-screen advertising solutions play into that demand. Swartz says that advertising is no longer about buying media—it’s about "being part of the entertainment experience." But advertisers are facing a challenge when it comes to understanding their users and creating value and truly meaningful advertising experiences for these users. Swartz explains that, "you have to recognize what device and how that user is using that device and what that user’s paradigm is when you’re delivering a marketing message, and that is challenging." Finding solutions that help brands and marketers understand this usage paradigm is imperative when it comes to creating successful multi-screen advertising campaigns. Rovi’s solution is helping brands embrace this nascent form of engaging advertising and, Swartz says, "We’re seeing that, when there is an immediate response path and there is an opportunity to react with ads and with brands…audiences actually do interact."

A road warrior's guide to locking down your laptop
Mobile computing may be convenient, but it's also inherently risky. When you drag your laptop to the coffee shop or bring it along on your travels, you?re making all your private data and one of your most expensive possessions a big, fat target for sticky-fingered thieves. And unlike traditional theft targets like jewelry or wallets, a laptop is an easy steal?the baddies just need to wait for you to turn your back, then grab the computer and run. In some cases, a criminal doesn?t even need to steal your notebook. He can simply pull your sensitive data out of thin air.
Fortunately, you can do a lot to minimize the perils possibly encountered on the road. By taking a few simple precautions and following some common-sense practices while you?re out and about, you can drastically reduce the chance that your laptop will be stolen and keep your data locked up tight. With great portability brings great responsibility!
Lock the front door
When you go on a vacation, you wouldn?t leave your front door unlocked, would you? Of course not. You shouldn?t leave your laptop completely defenseless, either. Lock your laptop's proverbial front door by making sure that your Windows user account is set up to require a password on log-in. A log-in password won?t protect against an even semi-competent hacker, but it could easily be enough to dissuade unsophisticated criminals from snooping through your files after stealing your laptop.
Windows makes it very easy to change your password or to set one if you don?t already have one. In Windows 7, just hit ctrl-alt-del and select Change Password, the fourth option down. After that's set, head to the Power Options in the Control Panel, click Require a password on wakeup in the left-hand pane, and click the radio button next to Require a password.

GM recalls Chevy Express, GMC Savana over rollaway concern
Filed under: Minivan/Van, Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Chevrolet, GM, GMC
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall notice for a small number of General Motors fullsize vans due to possible rollaway concerns. On certain 2013 Chevrolet Express and 2013 GMC Savana models, it is possible to remove the key from the ignition without the shifter being in park.
Only 980 total units are being affected by this recall, and GM is fixing the issue by replacing the ignition cylinder and associated keys. Affected Chevy vans were built during most of November and December while its GMC counterpart was only built for a week in November. The recall goes into effect on January 23, and to find out if your vehicle applies to the recall, the GM and NHTSA contact numbers can be found on the official recall notice, which is posted below.

Cisco investigates reported Linksys router flaw
Cisco is investigating a reported vulnerability in Linksys firmware that would allow a hacker to gain full control of the wireless router.
Security vendor DefenseCode discovered the flaw and reported it to Cisco "months ago." Because Cisco has yet to commit to a fix, DefenseCode plans to release details in a couple of weeks.
Cisco confirmed Tuesday that it had spoken to DefenseCode, but had yet to determine whether the vulnerability exists.
"We do not have enough information to confirm a new vulnerability," a Cisco spokesman said in an email. "We're continuing our own internal assessment."

Bob Lutz-approved Via X-Truck offers 800 hp, 100 MPGe
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, MPG, Detroit Auto Show
Give Bob Lutz a little bit of time and a big idea, and he will create for the world "the kind of vehicle I would like to own." That's what he called the X-Truck concept - from the Lutz-affiliated Via Motors - which debuted at the Detroit Auto Show. If you're thinking that the X-Truck (and Via's other offerings, the Presidential SUV and the VTRUX Van) looks a little like a Chevrolet vehicle, well, it certainly does. It's a converted 2013 Chevy Silverado, after all. The X-Truck, though, has been deeply modified inside and out. The truck now has a plug-in hybrid powertrain underneath while the outside was redesigned by Lutz and his team to look a little meaner and beefier while still offering the "fuel economy of a Prius." The changes include custom running boards, fender flares and modified wheels. It's also been raised five inches. A built-in iPad not only communicates information to the driver, but can also communicate with the service department to solve problems.
No official EPA numbers have been released, but Via says its vehicles will get "over 100 mpg in typical local daily driving." As Bob Lutz puts it, "Wouldn't it be great if someone built a truck that drives like the Volt?" It's got lots of power, too. The standard Via powertrain used by each of its vehicles includes a 402 horsepower electric motor. The X-Truck has two of them.
To supplement the 24-kWh, liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, Via's vehicles use a gas engine as a generator. In the case of the X-Truck, that means a 5.3-liter V8 from GM. The previously planned V6 generator was scrapped, in part because of availability and in part because the V8 is actually more efficient in this situation because the V6 would have to be worked harder, George Prokos, the service/warranty manager of field operations at Via, told AutoblogGreen.
Via vehicles get around 35 miles of all-electric range. When the battery is depleted to 20 percent state-of-charge, the generator kicks on to both provide traction and charge up the pack. When the battery is back up to 25 percent, the generator turns off. "The only way you can tell [the engine turns on or off] is by watching the iPad," Prokos said.Via vehicles get around 35 miles of all-electric range.
Via also talked a bit more about its relationships with Pacific Gas & Electric and Verizon, both of which are using Via vehicles in their fleets. PG&E said in a statement that the Via trucks and vans, which have an optional onboard inverter to provide 110- and 240-volt power, "offer PG&E the potential to provide mobile, on-site power to help manage electric outages and minimize disruptions for customers." Via and PG&E have been working together since 2008.
Prokos said the vehicles unveiled in Detroit point to a new consumer direction for the company, since both the X-Truck and the Presidential (a converted Suburban) might one day be sold to regular folks who desire a big PHEV. You know, like Bob Lutz. "As far as I know, no one else has a four-wheel drive, jacked-up plug-in truck," he said. "The idea is to give the consumer something a little different than the other extended-range vehicles that are out there."

New Mexico's Latina Gov. Susana Martinez makes waves in the GOP
SANTA FE, N.M. — In 2010, New Mexico's Susana Martinez made history, being elected the nation's first Latina governor. Since November, she's made waves, criticizing Mitt Romney for the harsh rhetoric of his presidential campaign and chiding fellow Republicans for actions that, she says, have needlessly estranged Latinos from the GOP.
